Stumpy

The hosts try to figure out why Reggie Miller wore number 31 and when his number was retired, ending in a mess at UCLA.

“UCLA has totally botched this.” (11:41)

Questions

Why did Reggie Miller wear number 31, and when did the Pacers retire it? (00:06)

Our guess
13 reversed (the opposite of the unlucky number), and the Pacers retired it around 2005-06 after he retired.
Reveal the answer
The answer
He chose 31 because it's 13 reversed and because his sister Cheryl Miller wore it. The Pacers retired it in 2005 after his final season, he entered the Hall of Fame in 2012, and UCLA retired it in 2013 (it was already retired for Ed O'Bannon).

[00:06] Oh, we doing under Google rules that was the player super excited told us we had to
[00:17] say we said we signed up for it in the end it's gonna be better and more true
[00:25] than Google can give you does anybody know why Reggie wore number 31 and when
[00:33] did he first pick that number is anywhere that in college you guys know and be like
[00:39] in high school pretty sure you were in college don't I just saw a picture of me
[00:47] UCLA the other day trying to I want to say this goes back to like he wanted to
[00:54] wear 13 maybe or something but like the school had retired his sister's number
[01:04] something oh no they feel like it's something associated with that now then
[01:10] they play at different schools different colleges well yeah but I mean I'm talking
[01:15] like like elementary school's retire numbers do they yeah share a Miller
[01:23] plays basketball yeah you do you retire her number was somebody quadruple doubles
[01:27] up in your house retire the number that's right oh but other than that I don't know
[01:34] that's my best guy feels I don't even know if that's true so pretty sure you
[01:39] wore 31 in college okay so it's it is like you know if you reverse the digits it's
[01:46] the opposite of the unlucky number mm-hmm also prime number hmm maybe super into
[01:56] prime numbers just a math nerd yeah yeah it's quite possible were there other
[02:02] famous number 31s prior to Reggie Miller that he would have been wanting to
[02:07] emulate like was Jerry West like he was 44 right or something
[02:14] Maravich Pete Maravich and if he were see I look I feel like Reggie didn't
[02:23] really care about the history of the game when he was growing up he cared
[02:27] about like beating his sister like I think he right he's he is a student of
[02:31] the game he knows a bunch about basketball but like I feel like when
[02:34] you're picking your number it's really not about it's not about the NBA or
[02:39] whatever I think it's probably more about his family there are not a lot of
[02:44] famous 31s and in basketball there's a bunch of baseball players and like
[02:50] Cedric Maxwell hmm so maybe his sister wore 30 and he was like I'm gonna wear
[02:57] 31 better maybe it's a higher number might have big been a big Grant Furr fan
[03:10] Grant Furr I don't know who Grant Furr is that guy was a fur fur the abuser he was
[03:26] a NHL goalie okay sure oh yeah yeah my man oh that Grant Furr so he did wear
[03:40] 31 at UCLA all right ah I believe that uh okay we're all right what according to
[03:50] the basketball network net they have a page called NBA players why they way why
[03:57] they pick their jerseys nice Reggie Miller according to the site war number
[04:02] 31 because it was the bad luck number 13 reversed well done Joey and also his
[04:09] sister wore this number his sister I think she was 31 13 it's the it's hard to
[04:18] tell the way they phrase it my guess is she wore 13 okay I think she did
[04:25] yeah we can look up what Cheryl Miller's number was no she's 31 31 okay well
[04:32] shit that's awesome so he's honoring his sister that's a surprising homage from
[04:37] him yeah that's actually that's really cool that's that's so opposite of number
[04:44] 13 and also honoring a sister probably more honoring a sister I think I'd heard
[04:50] that in the past at some point I did find in high school he wore number five
[04:54] and I don't know why but well that's a different under Google yeah well he just
[05:01] kind of said how the question was like how far back is he when did he first pick
[05:05] number 30 so high school I guess could know college college he wore he wore
[05:09] five which is three plus one right in your book okay so no it's probably what
[05:19] that is it's it's a four point play plus also a lane violation now he drew a
[05:26] technical foul oh nice the old five-point play yep all right all right and the
[05:38] last question he's got here is when did the Pacers retire his number oh we know
[05:45] this do you know that I mean I did so it was it was whatever so he retired 2004
[05:52] yeah or 2004 2005 season so oh five oh five so he retired no five they would
[06:04] have immediately done the ceremony for him right yeah I think oh six yeah the
[06:10] yeah it was like the first home game of the next season right great which would
[06:13] have been oh five oh five no yes October oh five right and then he goes into the
[06:26] Hall of Fame how many years later what's the thing five five years and he was he
[06:36] got it in the first year he was eligible right I feel like he waited a
[06:41] year I don't think I think he waited a year for some reason they didn't at all
[06:46] due to the beginning of the season they did at the end of the next all right at
[06:53] the end of the next season yeah all right okay did he start broadcasting the next
[06:57] season yes I think so they may have done it like when he had his when he had a
[07:03] gig in town okay so he retired after the 2004 2005 season so we were right on
[07:15] that and yeah he waited basically a full almost a full year then full year I
[07:23] think that's what it was I believe he they basically waited so I if I
[07:32] remembered this correctly they waited till he had his first broadcasting
[07:35] assignment in Indy I see so we made it easy for him to come back well he was
[07:44] like already here business by other teams to come out of retirement that
[07:48] first season they were trying to get the other yeah the Celtics trying to get him
[07:51] to come back and there was some debate whether he would or not because he could
[07:54] have swore they were getting them yeah he yeah for sure I don't think it's
[08:02] off because they're like we're not gonna retire this dude's number while he's
[08:05] still playing right if he's wearing another teamster maybe they should have
[08:10] preemptively done it just to shame him into not doing it well he made that
[08:15] decision he's he's a bit of a contrarian that would be pretty awesome to have your
[08:21] jersey retired in the rafters while you're playing against them and so
[08:30] imagine Jordan did that oh yeah maybe okay so he went into the hall fame on
[08:38] September 7th 2012 so if the five-year thing works he waited at least a year
[08:50] maybe two I don't know when the voting happened yeah it's probably just a year
[08:55] I think it's like six months before you actually go in sort of thing UCLA
[09:02] didn't retire his number until 2013 January and they're like oh he went
[09:07] into the hall of fame we should probably retire his jersey go that guy
[09:10] went here I want to know how many people were number 31 on for UCLA after he
[09:21] retired only one player Ed O'Bannon ah was that Indiana governor Ed O'Bannon
[09:34] yeah probably so I believe he's the only guy that had that number after Reggie oh
[09:50] and it looks like it's also retired oh no is that possible what they don't work
[10:02] so you're saying that they were tired the the jersey number twice yes I don't
[10:08] think they understand what Jersey retirees are they retired Ed O'Bannon's
[10:12] number in 1996 and he was 31 and they retired Reggie's number 31 in 2013 what
[10:20] man I guess that makes no no it doesn't make sense I mean I understand logically
[10:28] no so what happened is Reggie played and then Ed O'Bannon played Ed O'Bannon
[10:33] played from 91 to 96 his jersey retired like a year after he finished in 96
[10:38] at that point their jerseys retired right so 31's been retired sure but they
[10:45] didn't let somebody play it afterwards right but I had nothing to do with Reggie
[10:49] Miller and then Reggie Miller retires and like oh let's double up on 31 I mean
[10:54] the jersey number is already retired so why do you have to do another jersey
[10:57] retirement because he went to the Hall of Fame and you feel stupid that you
[11:00] let Ed O'Bannon wear it you know Ben and had a well Ed O'Bannon also had a
[11:04] very good college career you know you know you know what I gotta say about
[11:08] Ed O'Bannon suck at Ed O'Bannon Wow what about Frank O'Bannon you okay with him
[11:16] you know what is suck at Frank O'Bannon you're not retiring Miller's jersey
[11:21] you're tying the number right right it's not like nobody named Reggie Miller can
[11:25] now play for UCLA why did you re-retire the numbers my point did they re-retire
[11:32] the number or did they just retire for Ed O'Bannon listen they should have
[11:37] retired it after Reggie played but they didn't and then later they realized
[11:41] their mistake and there was already two at that point there are two players that
[11:45] they thought were deserving of having their number retired they happen to
[11:48] have the same number two birds one stone UCLA has totally botched this this
[11:56] is ridiculous I am what let's I'm gonna learn about some Ed O'Bannon O'Bannon is
[12:09] the lead plaintiff in O'Bannon versus NCAA and antitrust class-action lawsuit
[12:13] against the National College Athletic Association which resulted in the
[12:19] discontinuation of NCAA video games Wow ooh yeah actually I've heard this
[12:25] series Planet Money did a story on him yeah I mean he what you want to title his
[12:32] senior he basically now has resulted in players being able to benefit or profit
[12:40] from their likenesses use of their likeness yep and this is why you hate
[12:45] him Coalson no I'm just saying I don't understand why he would take Reggie's
[12:51] number because it wasn't retired get it retired and then I'm not mad at loved
[12:57] Reggie Miller I'm not I'm not mad on a guy for 11 Reggie Miller I'm actually not
[13:01] mad at Ed O'Brien I am or Ed O'Bannon I'm not mad at Ed O'Bannon I'm mad at UCLA
[13:11] for totally botching this it took them until 2004 to retire Gail Goodrich took
[13:23] them till 1990 to retire Karima Duljibar what are they doing who is Gail Goodrich
[13:29] like one of these one of the great NBA players of all time I mean he's
[13:35] definitely the best I mean I'm gonna go out and say he's the best one I haven't
[13:37] heard of the best Gail ever he's not even the best professional Gail he played
[13:45] for the Lakers and the Jazz he was a five-time all-star three-time all third
[13:55] all-time scorer among lefties in NBA history the Lakers retired his number 25
[14:08] jersey so there's that bang he was good leave me alone what are the Gail played
[14:17] in the NBA oh no I was thinking of Gail Sayers I'm just saying professional
[14:22] sports at large sure not at all the most memorable Gail fair enough Gail Goodrich's
[14:29] nicknames are stumpy and the stump ooh variations of a theme I like it I'm I am
[14:40] going to write UCLA a strongly worded letter about the O'Bannon Reggie Miller
[14:47] debacle see what happened CC stumpy stumpy average 25 point three points a
[14:56] game 73 74 season he played under wooden huh he's got a title you know it was dumb
[15:04] about Reggie's Jersey was when we had Brad Miller and they had to put our
[15:08] Miller and be Miller like we couldn't tell that they were different people
[15:13] right right and yeah Reggie had been there for 16 years it was like he was
[15:20] half a hundred pound difference but could barely tell apart different skin
[15:26] color different physical makeup different number like positions we were
[15:31] lucky we're gonna get them confused yeah yeah they should have made Brad just
[15:37] where Brad on the back actually you don't get your name can we get people
[15:43] to take pictures of their arm Miller Jersey and send those in because I like
[15:49] that I'd like to see some arm Miller jerseys I remember that you're gonna make
[15:51] a montage of the arm I like this I like this era well and one one other thing
[15:56] from from Andrews question is he's asking is the under google podcast
[16:02] stream all new podcasts or we pull in for the old ones for our Saturday post
[16:07] yeah Coalson this is your baby yeah excellent question Andrew thanks for
[16:12] paying attention what I've done is I've gone back throughout history clipped the
[16:18] under googles from the show so we're not producing new material but there are
[16:24] basketball fans that just like basketball and have to suffer through
[16:31] our under googles and there are fans of us for some reason that don't like
[16:35] basketball that have to suffer through basketball to get the ungoogles and so
[16:40] what we decided to do is take the under googles out let there be a separate show
[16:45] that comes out on Saturday and we really appreciate that you have subscribed it's
[16:51] a fun show usually short about 10 minutes and it's it's about three years
[16:57] behind the curve right now so if there's stuff that seems not timely
[17:03] stuff talking about elections or you know I think the most recent one that was
[17:08] fairly time-based was the Oscars and it was talked about the Oscars like three
[17:13] years ago but it's I find them still fun and you know a year a year and a half
[17:18] from now that will catch up to real time and then we'll have to start
[17:21] doing separate under google pods we'll have a just a full-time spin-off I
[17:30] would say that's right
